Friday forecasts!

I am looking forward to some stupendously ignorant commentary on the Dubai default this weekend ...

Property company borrows spectacularly during boom, goes spectacularly bust during recession? This sort of thing could never happen in our first-world, free-market democracies.

I'm happy to profess ignorance. What can I read to avoid getting even ignoranter?

I think Johann Hari is rather good on this.

"We cannot wish away Iran’s bomb
Iraq and Afghanistan may seem problem enough, but this threat is too big to ignore"

Possibly, Dave, but our capacity to deal with real problems has been diminished by getting involved in Iraq and Afghanistan. Others saw this, you didn't.

I like the way he castigates unnamed others for being too tired of foreign policy arguments to debate the Iranian nuclear issue properly and then says of addressing the issue of Western hypocrisy (telling Iran it can't hve nukes while not getting rid of its own and allowing Israel, among others, to have covertly developed them):

one can only admit that, yes it is a bit [hypocritical], but that (a) there are historical reasons for this that would take some unpicking and (b) the solution, as suggested in the Non-Proliferation Treaty, would be to lose nuclear weapon capacity rather than to spread it to every nation that feels inclined to own H-bombs of its very own.

so what are these 'historical reasons'? Is he talking about the historical reasons for Israel having nukes or for us? Surely there are 'historical reasons' why Iran might want them too? Why, if others are lazy and weak-willed or not addressing the Iran issue, is he not likewise for not actually unpicking these historical reasons?

And also: his NPT idea - well yes, but Israel isn't signed up to that. And in addition, Aaro mocks anyone who dares suggest we scrap Trident.

I do love that opening paragraph, though... The Iranian bomb is beginning to feel like one of those horrible things you saw coming all along, but never felt quite able to stop. This reminds Dave of Zimbabwe, although readers may be able to think of other obviously insane plans with potentially horrible consequences that people might have wanted to stop, but couldn't. I'm not rejecting the idea that this is an entirely deliberate tactic on Aaro's part out of hand.

Anybody care to predict Nick/Ratbiter's response to the news that Justice Eady has thrown out that mosque's complaint against Policy Exchange? Perhaps he will have a calm and reasoned critique, but surely Nick's hated nemesis saves Nick's new mates' bacon in fight with horrible clerical fascists means all kinds of bizarre logical contortions are imminent.

"even such a depraved, decadent figure as Eady could not go along with the moral corruption seeping out from the brown fascist women hating [subs fill in which one please] mosque as it washed against the determined , tough liberal minded , hearty chaps at Policy Exchange. Some jolly pretty girls work there too. Hic!"

HP seems extremely peturbed at the moment by the great threat posed by Bongani Masuku - he has warrented three out of the last four posts.
He is currently doing a tour of Britain and clearly he is going to attract huge crowds of loyal followers given his prominent position as, er, International Relations Secretary of The Congress of South African Trade Unions.
